The traveling fellowship porgram
As noted in the Guiding Principles, identification and training of high potential young orthopedic surgeons is a key focus of the OSM Research Foundation. The Members believe that an important aspect of the OSM Research Foundation and its programs is the international learning network. Outcomes of the Traveling Fellowship Program are development of prominent mentors, developing a network of peer surgeons, learning techniques in surgery, rehabilitation, patient education, research and evidence-based surgery. The Traveling Fellowship program will be flexible and it will be applied to fit the needs of individual surgeons. In all cases, the Traveling Fellow will be a surgeon of high integrity and potential. Two basic models are envisioned:
- The 12 Month Fellowship. A high potential young surgeon will have the opportunity to visit and work with prominent surgeons in the U.S. and Europe. Typically, the Traveling Fellow will spend 3-6 months with several prominent surgeons over the duration of the Fellowship. The Traveling Fellow will conduct a project focused on a particular aspect of evidence-based surgery. It is expected that the project will be published as an article, abstract or poster at a prominent meeting.
- The 6 Month Fellowship. A high potential young surgeon will be selected to visit and work with one prominent surgeon. The goals and expected outcomes will be similar to the 12 Month Fellowship. It is expected that there will be a specific location on the OSM Research Foundation web site for the Fellows to interact with each other. There will be special sessions at the Annual Meeting for the Fellows.
